He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ermon Butler of Calvary, Ga., and a sister; Gertrude Simon of Lockeford.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice Betts Butler, whom he married Dec. 21, 1952. The service was at 11 a.m. EST Saturday, Dec. 27, at First Baptist Church in Quincy, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Family received friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. EST Dec. 26 at Independent Funeral Home, Quincy.

H.M. was born to Robert Louis and Pearl Lee Butler in Calvary, Ga., on December 29, 1925. He served in in World War II in the 4th Infantry Division, 12th Infantry Regiment and received the Bronze Star for bravery in Germany. After he returned from overseas, he served as a paratrooper instructor at Fort Benning, Ga. After the war, he graduated from Chipola Jr. College, where he was an outstanding baseball player. After graduation he returned to Quincy where he was a successful shade-tobacco farmer. H.M. retired from the North Florida Research and Education Center in 1990. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. H.M. also served on the board of the Gadsden County Farm Bureau and was a committee member of the Farm Service Agency.
