"High
adventure, shipwreck and a search for pirate treasure along modern day
Florida's forgotten Gulf Coast." -- Spyglass Publications. After discovering a
treasure map scratched on an old telescope, Shandy and Jib, — two
modern-day Huck Finns and Tom Sawyer-type boys — enlist the aid
of their old friend, Catfish Jackson, and his houseboat to track down
the hidden treasure. The adventurers find themselves shipwrecked on the
Florida Gulf Coast, pursued by modern-day pirates, and lost in a swamp
where they learn unusual tricks that enable them to survive one day at
a time. With the help of a strange crew of surveyors, they salvage
their boat and continue on to the deep, freshwater spring where they
find the treasure in an underwater cave but encounter the strange sea
creature that the pirates said guarded it. 194 pages. Paperback 5 x

FROM THE
BOOK:
"A
tap on his arm called his attention back to the spring. Jib pointed
excitedly ahead of them. In the bluish haze Shandy saw the mouth of the
spring. It was a large gaping hole with a veil of sand puffing up like
smoke from the black entrance. From the surface they had not seen it
because of an overhanging rock ledge, but the opening looked big enough
to drive a car into. Tendrils of weeds fluttered nervously on the ledge
and occasionally leaves or sticks caught in the current were whipped
upward by the powerful invisible force. Surrounding the basin were
schools of fish - all hovering motionless and pointing toward the
spring.
Moving to their left and keeping the rock wall close
to them, the boys were able to approach the opening. Shandy scanned the
ledge overhead, trying to locate the Indian symbol that was supposed to
be there. At first he didn't see it because of the growth covering most
of the rock. Then, farther to the left, he detected a crude cross
carved deep in the stone. It was a foot wide and not all of the symbol
was visible, but Shandy could see enough to be certain it was the same
picture that had been scratched in the cave on Mound Key."
