Sample Scope & Sequence

It is not necessary to write plans for multiple years before beginning.  It is okay to try homeschooling for a year and see if it works for your family.  In that case, just write plans for one year.  That said, provided as an example, here is the first Scope & Sequence I wrote when my oldest child was five years old, intending to homeschool through high school:

Using this same format used for my overall scope & sequence, I write out an individual plan for every child (do this annually, not years in advance).  I use the children’s individual forms for a quick evaluation of our progress in late November and again in March.

Looking back, I can see that part of this plan worked very well for us, and other parts did not.  I don’t think I would plan K-12 all at once again.  It might be better to begin by planning elementary school, and once the oldest child is in sixth grade, plan grades 7-12.

We have not stuck strictly with this plan.  There have been a few changes made.  However, it was a good exercise to think about what we wanted to accomplish and how we would do it.  It is okay to make changes.  New, better, curriculum will be published.  Your children might develop interests in areas you’d never considered.  The law might change, encumbering you with additional requirements.  This plan is just a tool; it is not etched in stone.
