A Few General Homeschooling Tips
- Do not feel that you have to justify
your decision to homeschool.
- Relax. Enjoy spending time with your
kids.
- What works for another family will
not necessarily work for your family. AND what works for your family
will not necessarily be what’s best for someone else’s family.
- Every child is unique. What works for one child in your
family is not necessarily what will work for other children in your
family.
- If you’re a Christian, the best
method of curriculum selection is to pray. God knows your child and
knows what will work best in your family.
- Nearly everything advertised in
catalogs sounds good. It’s supposed to; they’re trying to sell it. Some
of those things that sounded so good in the catalog are worthless; don’t
get stuck with a bunch of stuff you won’t use. Pray before purchasing.
- You don’t have to have a “classroom”
in your house. Teach sitting on the couch, or outside in the treehouse,
or… Education is a natural part of life and can take place anywhere.
- It’s okay to take a few days off
every now and then. If you’re expecting, take the month off before your
baby is due to get things ready for the baby (save up books you want to
read to the kids, and after the baby is born, have the whole family
cuddle up on the couch – you read aloud to everyone while nursing the
baby).
- Borrow books from the library
whenever possible. Some books you read only once and there’s no point in
taking up shelf space with those (and emptying your wallet). If you find
that you keep renewing a certain book, that’s a good candidate for
purchase.
- Use a crockpot to assist with meal
prep.
